Aakhri khat afsana by Naeem Sawan
Aakhri Khat” (The Last Letter) by Naim Sawan is a deeply moving short story that explores the complex dynamics of parental pride, severe regret, forgiveness, and the eternal bond between a father and his child. Set in a quiet, aging village home, the narrative centers on Baba Rahmat, an elderly man carrying an unbearable weight of guilt. Sitting by his window every evening, he holds a faded envelope given to him years ago by his daughter, Maryam, whom he disowned after refusing to support her dreams of pursuing higher education and building a school for girls.
The story unfolds through a poignant interaction with a curious twelve-year-old boy, Hamza, who encourages Baba Rahmat to finally open the letter. To Baba Rahmat’s deep sorrow, the letter contains no resentment; instead, Maryam expresses profound understanding and affection, asking only that her father wait for her return. However, the tragedy deepens as Baba Rahmat confesses that Maryam did return three years prior with her child, but his pride led him to turn her away once more—a decision followed immediately by her fatal accident.
The narrative reaches an emotional culmination when a young girl appears at the door—Maryam’s daughter. She hands Baba Rahmat a final paper left by her mother, bearing a single, transformative message of absolute forgiveness. Aakhri Khat stands as a powerful reminder that while rigid pride can create painful distance, true love and compassion transcend time and loss to heal even the deepest wounds.

Short Scene of Aakhri khat afsana by Naeem Sawan
