The wealthiest and most arrogant man in the neighborhood, Shams Sahib, who would never let poor kids stand near his doorstep, suddenly invites Kazim to play inside his mansion. The local men, usually disconnected, rush to the mosque for prayers on a non-Friday afternoon. Even more shockingly, the cruel neighbor women who used to insult his mother bring food to his house and sit with her as friends.
The emotional climax of this sequence is when Kazim finds his mother dressed as a beautiful bride in a vibrant red dress, and she gets married to a kind-hearted man whom Kazim had always wished to see as his father. For a few moments, the reader is led to believe that a miracle has occurred, and the family’s miseries have finally come to an end. Kazim starts listing the beautiful changes this marriage will bring: no more labor for his mother, a prestigious school for himself, no threat from the landlord, and the freedom to buy his favorite toys. This list is a profound representation of what an underprivileged child genuinely longs for.
The turning point of “Me aur Ammi” is sudden and heartbreaking. Just as Kazim is about to embrace his new, happy life, he is shaken awake by his mother. He realizes that he was crying in his sleep, and his face is wet with tears. There is no wealthy stepfather, no supportive neighbors, and no grand feast. His mother is dressed in her regular, worn-out clothes, rushing to work because she cannot afford to be late, leaving behind a fresh paratha for him because he slept hungry the previous night.
The ending phrase, “This means it was just a beautiful dream… I wish it were reality,” leaves a lasting impact on the reader’s soul. شمس صاحب: محلے کے سب سے امیر، مغرور اور مطلبی شخص۔ وہ عام دنوں میں غریبوں کو اپنے دروازے پر بھی نہیں بھٹکنے دیتے، لیکن کاظم کے خواب میں ان کا رویہ بالکل بدل جاتا ہے جو کہانی کا ایک اہم ترین موڑ ہے۔
مہربان شخص (باپ کا کردار): کاظم کے خواب کا وہ کردار جسے کاظم ہمیشہ سے اپنے والد کے روپ میں دیکھنے کا متمنی تھا۔ وہ ایک شفیق انسان کے طور پر ظاہر ہوتا ہے جو کاظم کی امی سے نکاح کر کے ان کی زندگی بدل دیتا ہے۔

تعجب کی بات ہے آج سے پہلے تو اپنے دروازے کے سامنے بھی بھٹکنے نہ دیتے تھے اور آج… آج تو اندر بلا رہے تھے، وہ بھی محلے والوں کی فکر میں۔ حیران ہونا بنتا تھا۔
ہماری گلی میں سب سے بڑا مکان شمس صاحب کا ہی تھا۔ اور گلی میں سب سے زیادہ امیر بھی وہی تھے۔ وہ بہت مطلبی اور مغرور قسم کے آدمی تھے۔
ظہر کی اذان ہوتے ہی جب میں وضو کرکے، ٹوپی لگا کر باہر نکلا ہماری گلی میں رہتے سارے مرد اپنے کام چھوڑے مسجد کی طرف جا رہے تھے ۔
میں یہ دیکھ کر دم بخود رہ گیا۔ آج تو جمعہ بھی نا تھا، پھر ان سب کو اچانک کیا ہوا۔ مگر یہ لوگ نماز پڑھنے جا رہے ہیں تو آخر مجھے کیا مسئلہ ؟ یہ تو بہت اچھی بات ہے کہ سب نیک اور نمازی بن جائے،اور مجھ پر بھی رحم کھائیں۔
